Adobe Flash platform provides a great tool for us to output a number variable to various formats. By using NumberFormatter or CurrencyFormatter to represent your number in specific way. For example, I used to represent “31200″ as “31.200″ for Euro’s currency format. But watch out! You have to avoid a little pitfall.

Where is the problem?

The problem comes from the default character of decimalSeparatorTo is “.” and when you need to format your number, you set thousandsSeparatorTo to “.”. This is the point. You have to make these 2 properties different. If you don’t the formatter will not convert your number to expected result, it will error, and tell you in error property as “Invalid format”.

<!-- Formatter will not format variable for you. If your thousandsSeparatorTo
is same as decimalSeparatorTo (default is '.') -->

<mx:NumberFormatter id="formatter"
thousandsSeparatorTo="."
useThousandsSeparator="true"/>

How to solve?

It is easy. You just need to set decimalSeparatorTo property different from thousandsSeparatorTo property. After that, you will serve you as you expected. You can see the full version of screen cast for this article below.

<!-- Make 'thousandsSeparatorTo' and 'decimalSeparatorTo' different
to solve the problem -->

<mx:NumberFormatter id="formatter"
thousandsSeparatorTo="."
decimalSeparatorTo=".."
useThousandsSeparator="true"/>

Where to go from here?

Actually you will found that Adobe Flex SDK provides many useful tools for your application development while you are learning to use it. NumberFormatter and CurrencyFormatter is just an example. There is also DateFormatter, PhoneFormatter, and ZipCodeFormatter in the SDK, waiting for your need.

Everyone love Google Maps. Actually, we cannot avoid to use its. You might search and put those pins around your map or even share with your friends, colleagues, and family member. Now, if you got your own Android phone, you have to know that Google already released the latest version of Map application, Google Map 5.0, jump to the field with 3 major reasons that you should update to this version immediately.

Faster

Do you remember the time while Google Maps loaded each “square” to render on the map? If yes, it is in history now. The latest version represents the new solution to show you the map, Vector, which is “draw” the map from data it got from server. Yes, it is. Your map will be draw dynamically . The application just exchange data in smaller size and what you got is more faster Google Maps.

3D Map Interaction

Google Maps use vector solution to render everything dynamically. So it includes every possibility to represent the object in the map, included with 3D building model! You can also tilting, rotating, smooth zooming, and using compass mode (3D building still be added for the city around the world but you can check the list of those cities here)

Vector and 3D building will be at your device

Offline reliability

Mobile internet connection is not 100% reliable. Even previous design of Google Maps application is for the freshest information on your map. But often you will found a blank map with a blue dot (represent your location) while you are standing in subway. The new version of Google Maps solved this with cache vector data into the application. So map can be redrawn again without internet connection, also applied to offline re-routing.

Where to go from here

So there’s no reason to stay around with your old Google Map application on your phone. I suggest you to go to Android Market and update it as soon as possible. After that, enjoy your new map, on your device, on your world.
